At the first moment of physical contact between Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine in “The Idea of You” — a light touch of hands — the crowd at the film’s SXSW world premiere completely lost it. By the time the actors were kissing, the gasps, screams and applause were deafening.

Hathaway became emotional as she took the stage for a Q&A after the screening at Austin’s Paramount Theatre.

“I can’t talk,” she told the audience, crying. “I love you!” a fan called out, and Hathaway replied, “I love you so much. You have no idea what a gift you have given us by your responsiveness, by connecting to every little detail. I will never forget this screening.”

She continued, “For some reason, we talk about coming-of-age stories that happen to you early in your life, and I don’t know about you, but I think I blossomed. I live.” “So when Kathy [Schulman] and gabrielle [Union] So generously offered me the role, I was thrilled to say yes.

“The Idea of You” tells the story of Solenn (Hathaway), a 40-year-old woman who falls in love with 24-year-old boy band singer Hayes (Galitzine) after taking her teenage daughter (Ella Rubin) to Coachella.

According to Galitzine, she and Hathaway’s chemistry during the audition process was immediately “spiritual”.

He said, “These rooms can be extremely scary and unnatural, but something almost spiritual happened in there that made me feel an immediate connection with Annie.” “There was a simpatico between us, a shared sense of humor. It was very easy. I remember leaving that room thinking, ‘No matter what happens to it, I’m very proud of this special thing that happened there.’ He called me the next day: ‘We want you to be a part of this film.’

The film was directed by Michael Showalter, known for “The Big Sick,” “Hello, My Name Is Doris” and “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.”

“We definitely wanted to hold off the kiss as long as possible,” Showalter said of Solenn and Hayes’ first physical encounter. “A big part of this film is its earnings. You really want to feel like these two people have shared and gone with each other to the point where once the kiss happens, it’s earned and there’s nothing left to say.

Gabrielle Union explained that she joined as a producer after reading the book on which “The Idea of You” is based, written by her friend and “Deliver Us from Eva” co-star Robin Lee. Is. She optioned the film to Shulman’s Vale Entertainment on Lee’s behalf, and shared that she echoed Solenn’s struggles with the public perception of their relationship.

“I live it every day. People question our family; They question our love,” Union said of her marriage to Dwyane Wade. “They wonder, ‘What to do? You to be eligible?'”

“You deserve it all!” a fan shouted from the balcony.
