Christian Oliver, known for his roles in films such as Speed Racer and Valkyrie, died along with his two young daughters on Thursday when their small plane crashed into the water off the coast of a Caribbean island, Deadline reports. Oliver was 51 years old. The aircraft’s owner and pilot, Robert Sachs, also died in the crash.
The single-engine plane crashed Thursday afternoon en route to neighboring St. Lucia after taking off from JF Mitchell Airport in Bequia, a small island off the Caribbean nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, officials said. The dead included Oliver’s daughters Madita, 12, and Annik, 10.
“Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft encountered difficulties and crashed into the sea,” the Royal Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force said in a statement provided to media outlets. “Fishermen and divers from Paget Farm went to the scene in their boats to render assistance.”
According to officials, all four bodies have been recovered. The cause of the accident is still being investigated. According to local reports, the pilot radioed the tower shortly after takeoff saying he was having problems and would return. That was the plane’s last broadcast.
Oliver had just completed filming the final scenes of his latest picture, Forever Hold Your Peace, directed by Nick Lyon and starring Bai Ling.
Lyon paid tribute to Oliver on Instagram on the last day of filming, writing, “This is our 5th movie together. @christianoliverofficial and I produced this, and it’s our last day of filming! We talked about making a film together for years and we finally did it! Thank you @christianoliverofficial for being a great colleague, actor and friend. #Always keep your peace.”
On Saturday, he paid tribute to the late actor on Instagram, writing, “Rest in peace my friend @christianoliverofficial.”
Oliver, who was born in Germany, worked with Steven Soderbergh in The Good German, with Cate Blanchett and George Clooney, with Bryan Singer and Tom Cruise in Valkyrie, and with the Wachowskis in 2008’s Speed Racer.
