Des Moines Police: Motorcyclist dies in crash on E. University Av

This is the fourth traffic-related death in Des Moines this year and the third involving a motorcycle.

DES MOINES, Iowa — One person is dead after a crash Sunday afternoon, Des Moines police said in a statement. Press release.

Officers responded to a report of an accident involving a motorcycle at the intersection of E. 16th Street and E. University Avenue at approximately 2:10 p.m. Sunday.

When they arrived, first responders found a 41-year-old motorcyclist with “critical injuries.” Medics transported the man to a local hospital, where he later died. The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Based on witness statements and evidence at the scene, police believe a 61-year-old woman was driving west on E. University Avenue when she attempted to turn left onto E. 16th Street.

The motorcyclist, traveling east on E. University Avenue, crashed into the passenger side of the car. Police added that failure to yield and excessive speed may have contributed to the crash.

“No charges have been filed or citations issued at this point in the investigation,” the department said in a news release.

This is the fourth traffic-related death in Des Moines this year and the third involving a motorcycle.
