Former NHL player and boyfriend of Aryna Sabalenka Konstantin Koltsov dies at 42

Konstantin Koltsov, the boyfriend of former Penguins forward and professional tennis player Aryna Sabalenka, has died at the age of 42, according to his former Russian hockey club Salavat Yulaev.

Koltsov’s death has been ruled an “apparent suicide” and “no foul play is suspected,” the Miami-Dade Police Department said in a statement.

Police and fire departments were called at approximately 12:39 a.m. Monday after a male jumped from a balcony at the St. Regis Bal Harbor Resort in Miami, according to the statement.

According to investigators, on Monday, March 18, 2024, at approximately 12:39 a.m., Bal Harbor Police and Fire Rescue were dispatched to the St. Regis Bal Harbor Resort, 9703 Collins Ave., in reference to a male who jumped from a balcony. The Miami-Dade Police Department, Homicide Bureau responded and took over the investigation of the apparent suicide of Mr. Konstantin Koltsov (04/17/1981). There is no suspicion of any foul play.

“With great sadness we inform you that Salavat Yulaev’s coach Konstantin Koltsov has passed away,” the team said in a statement.

“He was a strong and cheerful man, loved and respected by players, colleagues and fans. Konstantin Evgenievich forever recorded himself in the history of our club.

“May his soul rest in peace.”

Koltsov played for the Penguins from 2002–06, appearing in 144 games for the team over three seasons.

His best season came in the 2003–04 campaign, when he played 82 games at the age of 22. He achieved career highs in goals (11), assists (23) and points (34).

For his career, Koltsov recorded 14 goals, 29 assists and 43 points after being selected 18th overall by the Penguins in the 1999 NHL Draft.

Koltsov also enjoyed a successful international playing career, playing for the Belarus national team at the 2002 and 2010 Olympics.

According to Reuters, he won the Russian Super League championship in 2008 with Salavat Yulaev, who is based in Ufa, and was working as an assistant coach for the team.

Koltsov and Sabalenka, who is ranked No. 2, were first linked in June 2021, according to People magazine.

She posted a heartfelt message on his birthday last April: “I love you @koltsov2021
Happy birthday my love. You are my dearest person, my best friend and my strongest support. May peace, strength, patience and health be with you. I hope whatever we have planned will come to fruition. I love you.”

According to The Athletic, Koltsov participated in Sabalenka’s Australian Open victory earlier this year.

According to the Daily Mail, Sabalenka was in Miami ahead of the Miami Open, where she has been seeded second.
