NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF-TV) – As police actively search for the man who shot two La Vergne officers over the weekend, the suspect’s mother is pleading with him to turn himself in.

She turned to NewsChannel 5, hoping that John Drake Junior would hear her message and her anguish, as the search for her son is now in its third day.

Veleria East looked at the camera as if she was watching and talking to her son.

“You just need to turn yourself in. I still love you and always will because you’re my daughter. I can’t stop loving you, but I need you to do the right thing and turn yourself in, please,” she pleaded.

East said he just wants his son to stop running.

“Come home, please. This is your mom telling you to come, turn yourself in, please. It’s not going to get better,” he urged.

East said she last saw and spoke to Drake Jr. a week ago, when he came to show her his new car, the same car police were apparently investigating this weekend as a stolen vehicle when Drake was shot outside the store. Dollar General in Los Angeles. Vergne.

And since East found out Saturday that he had shot two police officers and then fled, like any mother, she has been very worried and desperately afraid of what might happen.

“I just want him to turn himself in so he’s okay. I’d rather see him locked up than have to bury my son. I don’t want to have to do that. I’m sorry. I don’t want to have to do that. I don’t want to have to do that,” East said with tears in the eyes.

And to the officers who were shot, he offered a sincere apology.

“I’m so sorry. I don’t know what happened. I don’t know how it happened. I don’t wish this on anyone. And I’m so grateful that you didn’t, I’m so grateful. I’m grateful that you all are living and breathing,” she said East.

East said her son has had problems since he fell in with the wrong crowd as a teenager and got involved with drugs.

And she wants him and everyone else to know that she doesn’t condone what he did because it was wrong.

But East believes the 38-year-old man she still calls Little John is running away because she is afraid and hopes he is listening to her.

“Find the strength and think about your mom and come and turn yourself in. That’s what I would tell her. You know what to do. Let’s do it,” East said.

As we have reported, John Drake Junior’s father is Metro Police Chief John Drake.

East told NewsChannel 5 that the two married young and divorced when they were just 20 years old, and John Jr. was less than a year old.

We’re told Chief Drake is out of town and was not available for an interview, but he shared with NewsChannel 5 a new statement:

“I continue to pray for the full recovery of the two La Vergne officers and hope that my son is taken into custody safely so that he can be held accountable. Anyone who sees him is asked to notify authorities.”
