In Hulu’s latest venture into the realm of science fiction thrillers, “No One Will Save You,” which is currently available for streaming, Kaitlyn Dever takes the stage, battling extraterrestrial beings for nearly an hour and a half with hardly a word escaping her lips.
Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated, Dever assumes the role of Brynn, an anxious recluse whose tranquility is shattered one fateful night when otherworldly entities invade her residence. The skirmish to protect herself from these enigmatic “Greys” ignites within mere minutes of the film’s commencement. Nevertheless, as the narrative unfolds, we glean insights into Brynn’s inner turmoil through dialogue-free interactions with her fellow townsfolk. It becomes apparent that Brynn bears a harrowing secret, a facet that writer-director Brian Duffield elucidated upon in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. He shared, “I envisioned Brynn’s character comprehensively. Her intricate backstory and life experiences left me pondering the way forward.” Duffield went on to explain his creative epiphany, “Then, the concept of an extraterrestrial encounter struck me. I became engrossed in the notion that these invasions, these cataclysms, transcend individual circumstances and impact everyone’s lives, irrespective of their ongoing personal struggles. In my mind, these two narrative threads seamlessly intertwined. Confronting a menace when ill-prepared for human interaction offered a novel approach to storytelling.”
Except for a solitary line, uttered by Dever at the film’s zenith, “No One Will Save You” weaves its narrative tapestry without vocal exchanges. Duffield confided that this absence of spoken words was a conscious decision that crystallized during the later stages of the script’s development. He remarked, “It was a character-driven choice, as this protagonist yearns for a sense of community but doubts her worthiness of such. This narrative device accentuates her character arc significantly.” Duffield elaborated on the rationale behind Brynn’s silence, “Throughout most of the film, vocalization serves no practical purpose, for she exerts tremendous effort to remain inconspicuous. She refrains from exclaiming, ‘There’s an extraterrestrial entity in my domicile!’ Furthermore, when one has the caliber of Kaitlyn Dever, words become superfluous; her expressive eyes alone can deliver monologues of remarkable depth.” The film’s dialogue-deficient approach appears to have struck a chord with its audience, garnering acclaim from many, some of whom have taken to platforms like X to laud this exceptional choice. As one user aptly expressed, “What an absolute masterclass in cinematic craftsmanship. ‘No One Will Save You’ is a horror narrative akin to ‘Home Alone,’ but in this iteration, the masked assailant hails from the far reaches of the cosmos. Not a word uttered throughout the entire cinematic experience, yet it remains utterly spellbinding.”
