Kanye West enjoyed a victory of sorts Sunday evening after spending $7 million of his own money to share a homemade video during the Super Bowl.

The eccentric rapper was in attendance when the Kansas City Chiefs won over the San Francisco 49ers to clinch their third title in five years at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

But if his Alexander McQueen-designed crucifix mask hadn’t already attracted enough attention, a zero-budget ad filmed to promote a new merchandise campaign certainly did.

The 25-second clip, apparently filmed on a mobile phone, shows West – his voice clearly affected by newly fitted titanium dentures – urging viewers to visit his Yeezy website. Because she is traveling in the back seat of a car.

‘Since we spent all the money on commercial space, we didn’t spend any money on actual advertising,’ he admits. ‘But the idea is I want you to go to Yeezy.com, and find me some shoes, and ummm… that’s it.’

Brands including Dunkin’ Donuts, Mountain Dew, Uber Eats and Oreo spent an average of $7 million each to secure ad space during Sunday evening’s Super Bowl – which was seen by 114 million people worldwide.

But while West’s bizarre domestic addition to the TV schedule stood in contrast to the glossy, big-budget commercials that aired on Sundays, some fans claimed it was a piece of marketing genius.

X, formerly of Twitter, wrote one impressed viewer: ‘That genius is Kanye West. Put an ad on the Super Bowl that will trend beyond the Super Bowl.’

Another added: ‘The greatest Super Bowl ad ever.’

While a third admitted: ‘I didn’t watch the Superbowl but I have seen this ad 3 times. You are really very talented.

Elsewhere a fourth wrote: ‘This #SuperBowl ad is the nastiest ad ever.’

The ad appears to be a clever marketing move after West – who has briefly rebranded himself as Ye – pulled his latest album, Vultures 1, from streaming platforms and modified its cover art.

Sunday’s ad encouraged fans to visit their website, where merchandise related to the new album is available for purchase. The album returned to the streaming platform on Monday morning.

West stepped into enemy territory when he arrived at the Super Bowl on Sunday — where his rival Taylor Swift and ex-wife Kim Kardashian were both in attendance.

The rapper was headed to the big game in full disguise with his wife Bianca Sensori.

He wore an Alexander McQueen crucifix mask, a black leather jacket and shiny leather trousers, while Bianca wore a jacket and shiny hooded accessory.

The designer mask sat snugly on his head and was probably worn as a tribute to the late designer, who died on February 11, 2010.

Kanye’s marriage to Kim officially ended in 2021, and he has since started dating Odell Beckham Jr.
