  • Elon Musk criticized McKenzie Scott for her philanthropy, but that didn’t stop her from donating.
  • Scott more than doubled his planned $250 million donation pledge to $640 million.
  • Musk previously accused Scott of being a “super rich ex-wife” who is destroying Western civilization.

Jeff Bezos’s ex-wife MacKenzie Scott may come under Elon Musk’s radar for her charitable giving this month.

But that hasn’t stopped him from donating his money to charity. On Tuesday, Scott announced she would donate $640 million to 361 organizations.

The award is more than double the $250 million he promised last year.

Lever for Change, the organization that supported Scott with his charitable gifts, says 279 nonprofits will each receive $2 million, while the remaining 82 organizations will receive $1 million each.

According to Lever for Change, open call for applications “250 awards of $1 million each were initially planned.” But according to Lever for Change, “Given the incredible work of these organizations, as judged by their peers and external panelists, the donor team decided to expand the awardee pool and prize money.”

Scott’s massive donation comes just weeks after Musk criticized his charity work.

“‘Super rich ex-wives who hate their ex-husbands’ should be listed among the ‘reasons for the destruction of Western civilization,'” Musk said in a now-deleted X post on March 6.

Musk did not elaborate on why he chose Scott, but he has been a harsh critic of efforts to promote corporate diversity, equality and inclusion.

“DEI is just another word for racism. Anyone who uses it should be ashamed,” Musk said in a message. x post In January.

This was not the first time Musk had criticized Scott for donating billions of dollars to charity. In May 2022, Musk claimed that his companies were being sidelined by the Democratic Party because Scott “The PAC is presenting it as a donation.,

“It’s safe to say that McKenzie [ahem] Scott is actually not a big fan of her ex-husband. Unfortunately, many others are being caught in the crossfire,” Musk said in a x post On 31 May 2022.

To be sure, Scott has been generous with her donations, and Musk’s opinion on how she handles his money matters little in the process.

Scott said in a post on his website, Yield Giving, that the nonprofits were selected “from a pool of more than 6,000 applicants.” The 361 organizations, he wrote, “were advanced by peer organizations and the Round-2 evaluation panel” and “are important agents of change.”

Scott’s donations this year also include support for women’s health and minority groups. She is donating to the ACLU of Alabama, the Center for Empowering Refugees and Immigrants, and the Institute for Women’s and Ethnic Studies, among others.

“This Open Call award helps us take our fight for justice and equality to the next level,” said Megan Peterson, executive director of the nonprofit advocacy group Gender. “Our work to break down barriers continues.” Justice said of Scott’s donation. Peterson’s organization will receive $2 million from Scott.

And unlike most charities that attach specific reporting requirements to their funding, Scott stands by his no-strings-attached approach to his donations.

In 2022, Scott said in a blog post on Medium that he “donated nearly $2 billion to 343 organizations that support the voices and opportunities of people from marginalized communities.”

Scott’s donations in 2022 included $275 million to Planned Parenthood and $15 million to Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service.

Scott’s representatives at Lever for Change, as well as Musk, did not respond to Business Insider’s requests for comment sent outside regular business hours.
