ELIZABETH, New Jersey (WABC) — A four-alarm fire ravages a large industrial complex in Elizabeth, sending a fireball into the air just south of Newark Airport.
The fire broke out on Trumbull Street in the Elizabethport section shortly after 5:30 a.m. Friday.
Flames could be seen ravaging large industrial buildings. The fire started in building F6 and has spread to several buildings in the complex.
Firefighters were initially hampered by numerous dead fire hydrants in the complex.
So far there have been three roof collapses; Firefighters established a collapse zone and placed mutual aid fire trucks around the burning buildings.
The FDNY also sent a fireboat to help fight the fire from the water.
The state DEP is sending out air monitoring to make sure contaminants from the fire are not entering the air.
Now known as Elizabeth Industrial Park, the complex is home to several businesses at the south end of Newark Airport.
The burning buildings appear to be located behind a two-block-long structure dating to 1900 that once housed the Singer Sewing Machine Company.
It is not yet known what caused the fire or if there are any injuries.
This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
