“There’s the ability to use all sources of data inside the operating room, whether it’s your voice, or whether it’s video coming from a camera inside the body or somewhere else, to take advantage of the generative AI moment that we’re in, ” Powell told CNBC in an interview.

J&J’s medtech unit makes devices and solutions for conditions such as heart failure, kidney disease and stroke and its technology is used in more than 75 million procedures each year, the company told CNBC. Powell said Nvidia has worked in medical devices and imaging for more than a decade.

Just one minute of surgical video is equivalent to about 25 CT scans, so having the compute power and infrastructure to widely annotate and share those videos will help surgeons, said Shan Jegatheeswaran, vice president and global head of digital at J&J MedTech. Will be powerful for.

In the short term, he said eliminating and enhancing video identification could help educate and train surgeons. In the longer term, analytics can be layered on top of video to provide decision support in real time. More accessible surgical videos mean that residents will not have to rely solely on the insight and availability of more experienced physicians at their institutions.

“Think about athletes. They watch game tape, and as they watch themselves, they get better over time,” Jegatheeswaran told CNBC in an interview. “It’s kind of a starting point. That’s the holy grail in the short term.”

Powell said the collaboration is in the “early innings” and will take time to fine-tune and safely implement many of the applications. However, he said non-clinical use cases like automating paperwork will help save surgeons time and make a difference “out of the gate.”

“I think as patients we should all be really excited about the fact that this kind of technology is going to be accessible to all physicians and all hard-working nurses and all health care workers.” Powell said. “They will have the best equipment and information.”
