West Philly Sheriff Update on Shooting After Multiple Injuries at Eid Event

Three people were shot and five were arrested after a shooting occurred at a Ramadan event in west Philadelphia on Wednesday afternoon, prompting police to flock to the scene.

A police officer shot a 15-year-old boy, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said, adding that the teen is now in stable condition.

Authorities also said one of their police cruisers accidentally ran over a child.

The incident occurred around 2:30 pm during an event where hundreds of people had gathered to celebrate the holiday near Wyalusing Avenue in Philadelphia. fox29 reports.

The police commissioner said that of those five arrests, four firearms have been seized.

It is unclear what sparked the shooting; Bethel said he believed two groups exchanged gunfire.

A witness described the harrowing events to WPVI before lamenting the prevalence of gun violence: “You can’t even have a celebration without having to worry about someone getting shot.”

Congressman Dwight Evans, who represents West Philadelphia, said in a tweet: “Gun violence is never acceptable, but seeing it victimize people who gathered for a Ramadan event or any religious event is especially heartbreaking.”

“We must all continue working for change, because thoughts and prayers are not enough,” he added.

Commissioner says those involved in shooting ‘destroyed sanctity of event’

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said those involved in Wednesday’s shooting at the Ramadan festival had “destroyed the sanctity” of the event.

“I visited this event and we know that the majority, 99 percent of the people present, are good people who wanted to have a good time,” Bethel said. “And once again we have young people shooting that really destroyed the sanctity of what happened.”

Responding officers saw three men and a woman fleeing the scene. Those four people were detained by officers who recovered four weapons, investigators said.

Man Who Says He’s Father of Shooting Victim Condemns Philadelphia Violence

One of the men shot during the incident in Philadelphia on Wednesday was identified by a family member as Nhashon Tawfiq Richards. According to police, he was shot in the stomach.

Corey Taylor told NBC10 that he was Richard’s father and that his son was receptive and undergoing surgery.

“I’m tired of all the violence and nonsense that’s going on. “We can do better as a people, like all Homo sapiens, human beings,” Taylor told the outlet.

“That we have to do better, love each other and we can all live in prosperity, peace and harmony and stop hating each other. About what someone else liked or didn’t like about a woman or some kind of affiliation with a neighborhood or whatever. It’s stupid. And it’s nonsense. People’s lives are priceless.

“Appreciate and value your life. I love my son. I love my children. I love society. Anyone can rebuild their life. Anyone can.”

‘Whoever did this can’t even blame the devil’

Witness Zania Weatherford told the Associated Press that because of beliefs associated with Eid celebrations, the shooter “can’t even blame the devil.”

Ms. Weatherford had just gotten into her car for a moment during the event when she heard gunshots and saw people running down the street. She called her family members present at the event to make sure they were safe.

“Last year, someone set off firecrackers and scared everyone,” Weatherford told the Associated Press.

“This is just a celebration of life so that God forgives us our sins. There is a month when God chains the devil, so whoever did this can’t even blame the devil.”

What happened in the Philadelphia shooting?

At least three people have been shot and five have been arrested, after a shooting occurred at an Eid al-Fitr event in West Philadelphia, according to city police.

Local sources said the incident occurred during a festival where around 1,000 people had gathered to celebrate the holiday near Wyalusing Avenue in Philadelphia. Officers were already at the event “writing tickets” for nearby cars when gunshots were heard, Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said.

Gunfire had broken out in “two factions” inside the park, Bethel said, noting that they heard 30 gunshots.

An officer then “confronted” a 15-year-old who had a gun. The police officer fired, hitting the teen in the shoulder and leg.

A 22-year-old man was also shot in the stomach, although it is believed he was hit in the initial exchange of gunfire. Another minor was also shot in the hand.
