They don’t call it the Golden State for nothing.

For the second time this month, a billion-dollar Powerball winner was revealed in California, while the lottery’s current jackpot prize is close to the coveted 10-figure value.

Yanira Alvarez purchases the winning $1.08 billion Powerball jackpot ticket at Las Palmitas Mini Market in Los Angeles for the July 19, 2023 drawing.

Alvarez’s winning numbers were 7, 10, 11, 13, 24 and the red Powerball 24.

His landslide win last July ended a 39-draw jackpot run for Powerball and two back-to-back billions of dollars sold in California, the state lottery said, referring to Theodorus “Theo” Struik’s historic win. Was the first of the winning tickets.

California state law requires that jackpot winners be named along with their location.

Alvarez declined to make any public comments in conjunction with the announcement.

Before Alvarez’s identity was revealed, the owners of Las Palmitas Mini Market believed that the winner was an elderly woman who lived near the store.

“Hispanic woman, an older woman,” Angelica Menjivar, the store manager’s stepdaughter, told The Post. “100% a Latina woman.”

Alvarez, whose age was not immediately known, had the option of taking $1.08 billion, paid through annual payments over 30, or a lump sum cash value.

She opted for a lump sum payment of $558.1 before federal taxes.

California Lottery Director Harjinder K. “We can’t thank our players enough for helping support California’s public schools,” Shergil Cheema said. “Our mission is what drives us every day, and while jackpot prizes change the lives of big winners, they are also making a significant difference in the lives of students and teachers in classrooms across the state.”

At the time of the draw his win was the third largest prize in the history of the game.

The $1.08 billion prize win now ranks fourth on the record list, according to Powerball, after Struik hit the jackpot with his $1.765 billion payday in October.

On March 15, Struik was announced as the delegate to claim victory after tickets were sold at the Midway Market & Liquor in Frazier Park, California.

The two stores are approximately 81 miles apart from each other.

The California Lottery uses income earned through drawings to raise funds for public schools in the state.

“Last year’s back-to-back giant jackpot sequences resulted in an estimated $197.9 million in additional funding for schools.”

Both wins still trail fellow politician Edwin Castro’s historic $2.04 billion victory in November 2022.

The Golden State claimed at least a share of the four largest Powerball jackpot wins in lottery history.

In 2016, three tickets, one each in California, Florida and Texas, matched all six numbers to win a $1.586 billion prize, the first prize worth more than $1 billion at the time.

The Powerball grand prize is estimated at $935 million and the cash value is set at $452.5 million.

Next drawing is Saturday at 11pm
