So what’s really new? In addition to the two-sided board, there are also assist cards, which provide assistance, hints and clues and can be selected to match the challenge level of the player’s preference.

In the new version, scoring is a thing of the past – now there is only one goal to complete and collect goal cards.

Target cards include such challenges as: “Play a horizontal word,” “Play a three-letter word” or “Play a word that touches the edge of the board.”

The player who completes 20 challenges is the winner, while the player who uses all his helper cards without completing a single challenge is the loser.

Once 20 goal cards are reached, the game is over – that’s all.

Mattel says the new protocols and scoring – no need to do math for each turn – will offer “smaller games”.

Current UK No. 1 and 2016 World Scrabble Champion, Brett Smitherem, said in a statement, “The game reflects a trend among young people who want to avoid competitive games, instead focusing on teamwork and cooperation toward a fun goal. Give priority.”

Scrabble, one of the most famous board games in the world, has been around since 1938 and as the years have passed, it has added hundreds of new eligible words to its dictionary. But, so far, the board has remained the same all these years. The change comes ahead of National Scrabble Day on April 13.

“Scrabble is one of the world’s most famous word games, bringing people together across a board for over 75 years. The way we use words is constantly evolving and so is Scrabble, which is why the iconic game has created a second side to the board that is cooperative and fast-paced to make the gameplay more accessible, Mattel said in a press release.

New research found that nearly half of Scrabble players have tried to make up a new word to win the game, and 75% of Scrabble players aged 25-34 have had to check to see if a word is real.

“We play the original game, but change is inevitable,” Brandreth said.
