The Star Wars show The Acolyte, dubbed “Frozen meets Kill Bill” by showrunner Leslie Headland, has received its first trailer ahead of its highly anticipated Disney+ premiere.

The nearly two-minute trailer, below, opens with scenes reminiscent of the Star Wars prequel trilogy as we see the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, albeit before the days of Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace. Taking place during The High Republic – an era 100 to 200 years before the prequels that has so far only been explored in the novels and comics – the trailer shows the Jedi training in shining white robes representative of this era.

However, it then cuts to similar scenes to the original trilogy, as we see what is now a Star Wars mainstay: the cantina. However, Headland’s new take on Star Wars follows shortly thereafter, as we see striking action inspired by director Akira Kurosawa and martial arts films.

Other scenes show multiple Jedi on screen at once, including the yellow lightsabers iconic to the era, and the premise of The Acolyte is revealed: someone is hunting the Jedi. However, the show isn’t taking the traditional route here, as Headland has made clear that it’s told from the perspective of the “bad guys”, meaning the Sith.

This dynamic is exemplified at the end of the trailer, where Jodie Turner-Smith’s character says the line: “It’s not about good or bad, it’s about power and who is allowed to use it.”

Acolyte was announced in 2020 but not much information was revealed about it for some time. Amandla Stenberg was announced as the lead role in 2022, and Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae was confirmed as the lead character soon after.
