Welcome to the Brussels EditionBloomberg’s daily report on what matters most at the heart of the European Union.

The EU may face additional resistance to its support for Ukraine now that Slovakia has Russia-Friendly Elected Candidate President Pellegrini. During the campaign, Pellegrini accused his rival Ivan Korcok, who supports the kyiv government, of wanting to drag the country into war. Pellegrini’s victory is also a boost for Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who has irritated his allies since he returned to power last year by declaring his intention to normalize ties with the Kremlin. Slovakia’s turn toward Moscow comes at a time when the United States and Ukraine’s European allies are struggling to keep aid flowing and kyiv’s forces are increasingly outgunned by Russian troops.
