Tony Kushner has come out in support of Jonathan Glazer’s Oscar acceptance speech, calling the British director’s comments at the ceremony an “indisputable irrefutable statement.”

speaking on Haaretz Podcast which was released on Wednesday, four-time Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Kushner was asked about his feelings about a number of topics related to the Israel-Gaza conflict and referenced Glazer’s speech in which some Jews in Hollywood Celebrities were attacked and were recently the subject of an open letter that has been signed by 1,000 people.

During the podcast, Kushner, who is in Israel to promote a production angels in america In Tel Aviv, Glazer’s Oscar speech was lambasted, a speech he described as “a really undeniable, irrefutable statement.” The playwright is then asked if he agrees with Glazer’s comments, to which Kushner says, “Of course, I mean, who doesn’t?”

Kushner explains, “What [Glazer’s] It’s so easy to say. He is saying that Jewishness, Jewish identity, Jewish history, the history of the Holocaust, the history of Jewish suffering should not be used as an excuse for a project to dehumanize or kill other peoples.

“There is a misuse of what it means to be Jewish, what the Holocaust means, and he rejects it. Who doesn’t agree with that?” he adds.

Kushner says, “What kind of person thinks what’s happening in Gaza right now is acceptable?” “And if you find yourself saying out loud and publicly, ‘Oh, what they’re doing is OK with me,’ because you feel like it’s the only option for you, because you’re a Jew. You know, shame on you for protecting everything Israel has.

Earlier in the podcast, Kushner, who has long been critical of Israel and particularly Benjamin Netanyahu’s policies and treatment of Palestinians, addressed allegations that calling for a ceasefire was anti-Semitism. “The people I know who are passionately involved in the call for a ceasefire are not people who are anti-Semitic, they are not interested in destroying Israel and they certainly are not interested in genocide against Jews elsewhere “

“What they are really interested in, and the passion and anger that you see, is because thousands of lives are at stake, thousands and millions of lives are at stake. Because before our eyes, what looks to me like an actual ethnic cleansing is going on,” Kushner says. “I mean, I believe the extreme right-wing people in Netanyahu’s cabinet who say, ‘Yes ‘This is ours now’, how is this not ethnic cleansing?”

Kushner said he wanted “Israelis to be able to live in peace and security”, but he criticized “the treatment of Palestinians, as many Israelis have been saying for decades, the occupation of the West Bank and the imprisonment of people in Gaza, and the checkpoints, “And the wall, and all these things don’t really make Israel safe.”
