New video shows Jaremy Smith running through a southwest Albuquerque neighborhood on Sunday before he was arrested.

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Jaremy Smith was arrested in the middle of a southwest Albuquerque neighborhood on Sunday.

Christina Chavez told KOB 4 that the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office arrested Smith right in her backyard, just a few feet from her and her children.

On Monday we returned to that neighborhood to see how the neighbors feel. They told us this is not the first time they have witnessed gunshots so close to home.

“We’ve had a lot of random shootings, a lot of drive-by shootings,” said a neighbor who wants to remain anonymous.

She shared her experience after fugitive Smith was captured just meters from her home.

“Exactly, yes, 50 feet. Exactly, it’s scary. “I’m glad it’s over,” the neighbor said. “He walked past our house and then ran through the neighbors’ gardens. Pretty scary, so close.”

She told us that she was at church at the time but that her husband and son were at home.

“My husband and son were home and heard a commotion outside, and then they heard dogs barking, screaming and gunshots. And then they called me and my husband confirmed to me that they had caught the fugitive, which was, you know, that they were looking for who killed the state trooper,” he said.

When he got home, he said police blocked off the area for hours, until 8 or 9 p.m. Sunday.

“My next-door neighbor called and said, ‘What’s going on? The police are here and I only heard dogs and gunshots. And I said, ‘Yeah, stay inside until we figure it out,'” the neighbor said.

She says shootings aren’t the only problem the neighborhood faces almost daily.

“We always get people in and out this way. At times I was going over 50 miles per hour and my husband’s vehicle was totaled in our driveway due to people being chased through our neighborhood. So yeah, it’s been a tough few years in this neighborhood, so this was just the icing on the cake,” she said.

Looking ahead, he says all they can do is be more vigilant.

“We have cameras, and over the last few years, everyone around us has put up cameras trying to be attentive and aware of each other. That’s all we can be now,” she said.

The neighbor says that while it was a scary situation, she is glad the police were able to catch him. She also told us that her heart goes out to the affected families.
